or, alternatively, these endless summer days [/meta]

Summer's always been my favorite season. Sun in my face, sand in my toes, waves in my ears - will you stay longer this time? ♥ Image taken in Bataan, 2009. Words from Freezepop's "Swimming Pool."

summary of this day

or, alternatively, a last ditch attempt at responsible citizenship

today, 3 days before voter registration deadline. by virtue of missing the 2007 midterm elections and the 2007 barangay elections, i was deactivated as a voter, therefore i need to reactivate myself if i want to vote in may.

so.

6 a.m.: alarm goes off. i get up, fix coffee, take a bath, get dressed, head out.

6:45 a.m.: arrival at makati police headquarters (ayala extension, beside makati fire station) for police clearance. i need this because i don't have an ID that has my new makati address on it (i've been living in makati since july 2007 - 2 years, 3 months. At least 6 months of residence before May 2010 makes anyone eligible to vote in an area, fyi.) i pick up a form, fill it out, submit it to the manong on duty. i am ninth in the queue. this makes me very happy.

9 a.m.: time served/processed.

9:20 a.m.: time processing ends.

9:40 a.m.: time police clearance received.

*

the makati comelec office is on the second floor of the makati fire station, fyi. however, when i got there, i was told that they were no longer releasing forms and that i should head to glorietta 4.

so i did.

*

10 a.m.: time of arrival, glorietta 4.

2 p.m.: time of registration end. (including an hour-long lunch break, that i spent in my seat, reading.)

*

madali lang magparehistro. mabilis lang siya dahil organized kahit napakaraming tao. kudos to the policemen who were actually very helpful. :) kasalanan ko na i waited this long to make up my mind about where to vote, pero di ba, konting tiyaga lang, voila! walang singitan, walang sigawan.

pwede!

*

this afternoon in glorietta while i was waiting in line in Step 2 (when you already have your form), this girl from UP who has already finished her registration process was walking around helping people fill up their forms. she says she's paying it forward. it's a shame i didn't get your name, but girl, mabuhay ka! :)

read-along bags ncca award for PDI

much of my life lately has revolved around these read-along sessions every other saturday, and the occasional fridays. what started as this small reading thing with about 20 kids in May 2007 has since expanded to jampacked sessions featuring at times more than a hundred kids - something that still strikes me as overwhelming until now. the event has since taken me places, some as far as baguio and bataan, some nearer like cavite and bulacan. i'm not really much of a kid person, but after more than 70 of these sessions, i think i'm developing a kind of affection for them. ahahhaa.

anyway, so we were extraordinarily surprised:

PDI Read-Along bags another award

Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines – For instilling the habit of reading among children, the Philippine Daily Inquirer has been recognized as a “culture-friendly” media organization by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Philippine-International Theater Institute (ITI).

The Inquirer, which was cited for its Read-Along sessions, was among the recipients of the first ever ITI-NCCA Award for Culture-Friendly Media Institutions in a ceremony held Friday at the Premier Guest House in Malacañang.

(L-R) with Ruthie, the boss and the comedy king himself

Other artists also honored included glass sculptor Ramon Orlina, designer Pitoy Moreno, and Dolphy for his contribution in Multimedia and Popular Art. It was my first time in Malacañang, and with the super short notice given us last-minute substitutes (read: night before, around past-7. event was at 9am the next morning, late pa ako.) i wasn't even able to dress up in proper Filipiniana. Shame actually. buti na lang naitago ako nang maayos-ayos dito sa photo na ito hehe.

boss says now more than ever we have to work harder to deserve the award. couldn't agree more.

to bataan and back

a thoroughly tiring day this has been. i've been out of the house a solid 14 hours and i'm due here again tomorrow in less than 12 hours for another similar activity - same program, different children. the whole thing's exhausting, but strangely gratifying. seeing those children dance around barefoot this morning made it all worth it.
